Stargirl by Jerri Spinelli

This has been my favorite book since I was at least 14 years old. It’s a pretty low reading level. The back of the book reads “she was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to cork board like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.”  This most likely does not make sense, or tell you anything about the book. These words are coming from the mind of Leo, the only person in Mica High School the even attempted to understand this girl. She dressed differently, she played a ukulele and sang happy birthday to people at lunch, and she had a pet rat that went to school with her. As a reader I instantly fell in love with her. She dared to be different, really different. That is amazing. Even though, as I mentioned before this is a low reading level, anyone of any age can get something out of this book.  It is still your basic story about high school students; you know the one weird girl (Stargirl) who everyone thinks is insane and a poor dresser. You also know that one great guy (Leo) who cannot find a single flaw in this girl everyone else included in the “we” has so harshly judged.
